The 10th Annual Road Safety Conference

<p>The 10th Annual Road Safety Conference, held from 27 to 29 October 2025 in Swakopmund, brought together key stakeholders under the theme “Aligning Road Safety Programmes to the NDP6”. The conference served as a vital platform for reflection, collaboration and the development of strategic interventions aimed at reducing road crashes and fatalities across Namibia.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister of Works and Transport, Honourable Veikko Nekundi, emphasised that Namibia can no longer approach road safety with a “business as usual” mindset. He highlighted the urgency of the nation’s escalating road safety crisis and called for stronger enforcement mechanisms to deter reckless behaviour on the roads. Among his proposed measures were the revocation of driver’s licenses for persistent offenders and the mandatory installation of dashcams in all vehicles. The Minister stressed that stakeholders must implement interventions that directly save lives and foster accountability on Namibia’s roads.

The conference agenda included presentations on road safety projects and initiatives implemented during the 2024/2025 financial year, as well as action plans for 2025/2026, underscoring a collective commitment to continuous improvement.

In his address, Mr. Eugene Tendekule, Executive Secretary of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), reaffirmed the importance of the annual conference as a space for collaboration, joint planning, and knowledge sharing. He noted that by working together, stakeholders can develop impactful strategies to strengthen road safety management and reduce preventable accidents nationwide.

Highlighting the human and financial cost of road crashes, Mrs. Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, CEO of the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, revealed that the Fund disburses an average of N$250 million annually in claims, with approximately N$200 million directed toward medical expenses.

Also addressing delegates, NRSC Chairperson, Mr. Eliphas Owos !Oab, stressed that the conference provides an essential opportunity to assess progress and set a clear strategic direction for the coming fiscal year. He noted that the Council is currently in the mid-term phase of implementing the 2nd Namibian Chapter of the Decade of Action for Road Safety, and aims to conduct a comprehensive evaluation to guide future efforts.

As Namibia continues its efforts to make roads safer for all users, the conference reaffirmed the shared responsibility of government, private sector, and civil society in creating a culture of safety and accountability.
